We met Robin Charlwood for breakfast, since he was
on his way to a meeting in Vancouver – lots of good Somer and China stories.
Then a quick walk to stretch out the legs before our long flight, and off to
the airport. We stopped at Duty Free, then Larry went off to a hot spot to do
email and such. He arrived back at the boarding lounge just as they were
calling for general boarding, only to discover
he no longer had his passport. We, and several others from our group, spent a frantic 10 minutes going through all our bags and pockets several times, before Larry took off at a run, thinking it may have fallen into the garbage at the duty-free. Meanwhile, I involved Air Canada, and all our friends were greatly supportive. I decided not to board, but when he got back Larry told me to go and he’d catch up in a day or two, or whenever he could. As I was boarding (in tears), one of the AC staff ran out to the plane to say the passport was found and was being brought to the gate! What a drama! But there were cheers all round when he walked onto the plane. The flight seemed uneventful after that and soon we were across the date line heading for Beijing.
